Youth Matters - Learn how the local high school students chose to allocate their $20,780 during Youth Campaign Allocation Day…

On Thursday, February 9, the allocation phase of United Way of Midland’s Youth Campaign took place. Local high school students learned how donations made to United Way of Midland are invested in programs that meet community needs.

Students from the following schools participated: Midland High School, Midland Freshman, Lee High School, Lee Freshman, Midland Christian School, and Coleman High School. The Youth Campaign Allocation day began with roundtable discussions lead by Program Provider representatives informing the students on United Way funded programs that address each of the following impact areas; helping kids succeed; promoting health, wellness and independence; strengthening and supporting families; and assisting in basic and emergency needs.

Following the Program Provider discussions, the students reviewed the programs, the impact areas, and then decided how to best allocate the $20,780 raised during the fall 2005 United Way Youth Campaign. The allocable amount this year is almost double of last year’s amount ($12,000), thanks to an outstanding 2005 Youth Fundraising Campaign. After the allocations were made, the students made on-site visits to Program Providers representing each impact area.

The students chose to allocate the funds in the following way:

  • $5,195 to programs that help kids succeed;
  • $7,273 to programs that strengthen and support families;
  • $3,948 to programs that assist with basic and emergency needs;
  • $4,364 to programs that promote health, wellness and independence.
