United Way of Midland Announces Final Campaign Amount and Surprise Message from United States Secretary of Commerce at Finale Event
October 30, 2002 - Midland, TX United Way of Midland announced the 2002 Campaign total of $3,001,314 at the Finale on Tuesday, 29 at the Midland Center. This amount exceeds the campaign goal of $3,000,001.
Although it would be extremely challenging, we knew we had to set the goal high because many people are counting on us, said 02 Campaign Chair, Keith Weiser. I feel so blessed to have worked with so many great people and see the true spirit of community come alive in Midland.
The funds from this years campaign will benefit four basic areas of need: strengthening and supporting families, helping kids succeed, assisting with basic and emergency needs, and promoting health, wellness and independence. Last year 57 programs were funded in these areas.
The finale wrapped up with a videotaped message from Don Evans, United States Secretary of Commerce, sent over-night from Washington, D.C. Mr. Evans was United Way of Midland Campaign Chair in 1980 and President of the Board of Directors in 1989.
I am proud to know Midlands generosity has grown -- as the economy in Midland and the nation has faced increasing challenges. This years theme Facing The Challenge is representative of what we as a nation are experiencing. I am not surprised that the giving spirit of Midland has prevailed, said Mr. Evans in his message to the Finale audience.
