United Way of Midland Funds 59 Local Programs in Midland Thanks to the Communitys Generosity
December 19, 2002 - Midland, TX The United Way of Midland is pleased to announce that 59 programs in four major areas of need will receive funding in 2003. Midlanders investing in their community through United Way of Midland made this funding possible.
Twenty-one programs will be funded in the area of Helping Kids Succeed. This includes programs that offer after school activities, homework help, character development, leadership development, and adult mentors.
Seventeen programs to Promote Health, Wellness, and Independence will receive funding. This includes programs that offer family counseling, parenting skills and daycare and after-school childcare for all income levels.
Ten programs will be funded to Assist with Basic and Emergency Needs. This includes programs that offer homebound and elderly nutrition programs, help with the cost of dental services, help with prescription costs, substance abuse education, and substance abuse counseling.
Eleven programs in the area of Strengthening and Supporting Families will receive funding. This includes programs that offer shelter for the homeless and for those needing emergency services, crisis intervention and therapy for victims of sexual abuse and assault, and information and referral for anyone in Midland County seeking health & human service programs.
These programs are offered through 23 local program providers. Qualified 501(c)(3) program providers began the application process in July 2002. Over 75 volunteers from Midland reviewed applications, budgets and made on-site visits to the programs before making recommendations to the United Way Board of Directors. The Board of Directors made the final funding decisions on December 11, 2002. Distribution of funds will begin in January of 2003.
I feel it is important for donors to be aware of the impact of their donations, said Community Investment Director, Alice Freidline. These programs will improve the lives of thousands of Midlanders and this is made possible by the generosity of this community.
