High School Students will invest $11,000 in United Way of Midland Programs during allocation phase of Youth Campaign on March 27, 2003

March 20, 2003 - Midland, TX – Thirty local high school students will learn about community needs and the United Way funded programs that are striving to meet those needs on March 27 from 12:00 to 5:00 p.m.

The students, chosen with the help of officials from Midland High School, Lee HS, Greenwood HS, Coleman HS, Midland Freshman and Lee Freshman, will tour United Way of Midland funded programs from 2 to 4 pm. At the completion of the tours, they will return to the United Way office to decide how to best allocate the $11,000 raised during the fall 2002 United Way Youth Campaign. “This is a great way to involve local youth in the raising of funds to meet community needs and in the process of investing those funds, ” said Alice Freidline, United Way of Midland Community Investment Director, “The participants learn about non-profit programs that impact our community and they have a voice in the funding of those programs. This experience teaches social responsibility by understanding volunteerism, fund raising and providing community solutions.”

The students will visit the following Program Providers and programs:

  • American Red Cross – Emergency Services
  • Big Brothers Big Sisters - Community-Based Mentoring
  • Buffalo Trail Boy Scouts - Scouting
  • Boys & Girls Club - After school programs
  • Camp Fire USA - Kids Care
  • Casa de Amigos - Youth Education
  • CASA of West Texas - Voices for Children
  • Centers for Children & Families – Midland Clinical Counseling
  • Community and Senior Services - Foster Grandparents Program
  • Community Children's Clinic - Prescriptions
  • D Fy It of Midland -Shattered Dreams
  • Girl Scouts of the Permian Basin - Zink the Zebra
  • Midland Fair Havens - Transitional Housing
  • Midland Need to Read – English as a Second Language
  • Midland Rape Crisis - Education
  • Midland Rape Crisis and CAC - Children's Advocacy Center
  • National Kidney Foundation - Flight for Life
  • Palmer Drug Abuse Program – Education & Counseling
  • Safe Place - Shelter
  • The Salvation Army – Emergency Shelter
