VELLO

“Learn to read, read to learn”. This expression reflects the imperative that children must be strong readers by the third grade to succeed academically.

In their commitments to help children become strong readers, United Way of Midland, Anadarko, and Wells Fargo have made possible a new project called VELLO in some Midland classrooms. VELLO program goals are to improve children’s reading skills, increase their engagement in school and at home, and to increase volunteer opportunities for professionals. VELLO volunteer tutors can work from any device, anywhere.

VELLO is an innovative one-to-one online tutoring program that connects local classrooms to volunteers in a safe online environment. VELLO uses simple and safe screen sharing and audio formats to provide students access to a progressive reading curriculum, custom digital library, and caring volunteers. With the support of a virtual volunteer, students can read and complete activities to build reading skills and strengthen comprehensive literacy.
